The ‘Rainbow series’ by Daniela Schwabe (1984, NL) is the result of her investigation into her personal as well as our collective history of the Second World War. For three years Schwabe lived in the former NSB headquarters. Her fascination with this place and the stories of her own German relatives inspired Schwabe to create these new fragmentary personalities. The overlapping fragments and structures are giving a mysterious suggestion of a face. Thereby Schwabe has looked very precisely at the visual language of Aryan propaganda and integrated this into her own method. The figures emerge from the darkness but in spite of showing an SS-jacket here and there, somehow the dark theme turns into something trivial. The figures seem unaware of their hodgepodge faces that look grotesquely into the world. Did Schwabe manage to create an image of the ‘banality of evil?’
